The JDRF One Walk has one goal…to turn type one into type none!
Your fundraising efforts through the Walk will fund critical research to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes to change the lives of the millions of children, adults and families who fight this disease every day.
Entry to the JDRF One Walk is free, so it’s only through our community actively fundraising that we can walk for a world without type 1 diabetes.
And to help you on your way, we’ve put together a list of our top tips and ideas to help you reach your fundraising goal.
Set a fundraising goal
Set a fundraising goal as your first step so everyone knows what you are trying to achieve…so they can help you achieve it. The more ambitious your goal, the more motivated your friends will be to support you so don’t be afraid to aim high!
Donate to yourself
Make the first donation yourself to set the standard and encourage your friends to follow your lead. This will show your personal commitment to the cause and inspire others to support you.
Your fundraising page
Login now and personalise your fundraising page to share your reason for taking part and ask your friends to sponsor your walk.
Here are the key ways to use your page:
- Upload a photo of yourself or the person you’re walking for
- Share your personal story for taking part in the Walk
- Post blog updates (through your page) to thank your sponsors and update everyone on your progress
Send an email
Email is the best way to ask your friends for their support. Send an email to your friends, family and colleagues and share your reason for taking part in the Walk.
Make your email serious or silly, heartfelt or humorous, as long as it‘s from you.
Use social media
Social media is a great way to keep people up to date on your progress and ask for support. Ideally, you want to be posting an update at least once a week to keep people updated and thank your sponsors.
When posting on social media, don’t forget to include your fundraising page link so your friends can click straight through to your fundraising page.
Check out these great Facebook downloads and customise your personal Facebook page to tell everyone about your walk.
You can use social media to ask your friends for support, update sponsors on your progress, celebrate milestones (e.g. when you reach your goal) and publicly thank your sponsors.
Host an event
There’s no better way to get the community behind you than by hosting a local event. Some great ideas include hosting a BBQ, trivia night, movie night or dinner.
Everyone loves to get behind a great cause (and have a great time), so grab some friends to help you and start spreading the word.
If you are holding an event, make sure you reach out to local businesses for raffle prizes and auction items…you’ll be surprised at everyone’s generosity.
Ask your company to match your fundraising efforts to show their support for a great cause! You can post a blog update on your fundraising page to personally thank them (and display their logo) and get them some great recognition as a reward.
If they can’t commit to matched funding, then just ask them for a one-off donation to support your efforts.
