For those who don't know, i'll share a rather personal story, my brother was diagnosed with T1 at 10 years old way back in the early 2000's.
In Australia in 2000, managing type 1 diabetes primarily involved regular blood glucose monitoring, multiple daily insulin injections with short-acting and long-acting insulin types, a carefully controlled diet, and close monitoring by a healthcare team, with limited availability of advanced technologies like insulin pumps or continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) which were becoming more accessible but not yet widely used.
It was a struggle on my brothers mental health and unfortunately at the young age of 13 he passed away due to a very sad series of events that led to ketoacidosis.
I'm joining the world's largest walk for a future without type 1 diabetes (T1D) at Stow Gardens on Sunday 30 March 2025!
Why? To help fund life-changing research aimed at improving lives and curing T1D.
Type 1 diabetes can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.
