I'm walking to raise money for diabetes research and in the hope that one day there will be a cure ??

I'm joining the world's largest walk for a future without type 1 diabetes (T1D) at Davistown Waterfront on Sunday 6 April 2025!

Why? To help fund life-changing research aimed at improving lives and curing T1D. 

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes five years ago and living with this diseased has changed my life forever. Whilst I am able to continue to live as I did before, including playing sport - T1D affects every moment of my life. Proper diabetes management means constant watching my glucose levels, every thing I eat or drink must be carefully considered and insulin dosed for any carbohydrate I consume. Despite being very vigilant and educated about my disease- I still end up with hospital admissions multiple times a year. Imagine not even being able to have a cup of coffee or pick up a snack without having to stop and think about not only the carbs, but the protein and fat in it as well- and giving yourself insulin every single time. The mental load and overwhelm of diabetes is as much a struggle as the disease itself.

 Whilst advancements in medical technology have made management of the disease less manual- technology only goes so far and there are still improvements to be made.

I am walking in the hope that through research , one day there will be a cure for T1D and in the event that either of my children inherit this from me- maybe things would be a little bit easier for them. I would also like to raise awareness about the fact that this disease can strike anyone of any age- I was diagnosed at a point where I was the fittest I had been in my entire life and my own lack of awareness of late onset T1D meant that I suffered more than I should have before diagnosis.
