I'm walking in Melbourne to turn type one into type none!
On the 13 August 2023, our sweet little girl, Olivia, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at just 13 months old. She is now 2 and half and has been living with T1D for just over a year and a half. She has officially lived with it longer than she hasn’t.
Living with T1D means Livvy’s life is very different to that of a typical 2 and a half year old. In our family, it’s particularly easy to see the extra steps and preparation involved in caring for a toddler with T1D, as Liv is actually a twin (and her twin doesn’t have it). But this doesn’t mean she can’t do everything her twin sister does - it often just takes some extra planning to ensure Liv is safe.
Unfortunately, T1D isn’t something she will one day grow out of. She’s got it for life, unless a cure is found. That’s why I'm joining the world's largest walk for a future without T1D at Princes Park on Sunday 2 March 2025!
Why? To help fund life-changing research aimed at improving lives and curing T1D.
Type 1 diabetes can strike anyone (including very little babies!) at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day.
Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy. If you’re interested in what life looks like for a toddler with T1D, I share Livvy’s story on her Instagram account - Livvy.with.t1d
