Laykyn's Type 1 Journey

On the 21st of January 2024 Laykyn had been unwell for a few days. He had got his 1 year old needles on the 18th of January and by that night was spewing. On Friday the 19th I took him to the GP where it was discussed that he may have had a reaction to his immunisations, was given wafers for nausea and told it should settle within a few days. Sunday comes around and he had lost weight, was peeing out of his nappies and drinking excessive amounts of water like he could not quench his thirst. By Sunday afternoon he was lethargic, had black sunken eyes and was extremely pale. It then hit me that my son was a diabetic! Upon entering the hospital they assured me he was not a diabetic but would check his blood sugar and ketones and everything would be ok. It was not, he was infact in DKA. The next 2 weeks was a roller-coaster ride as Laykyn, myself and my mum Janelle spent the next 2 weeks in QCH in Brisbane while daddy was busy at home working looking after Taytum and trying to move house. We are so thankful for our army of people we have had for support from the start and along the way we could not have done what we did without use. 9 months later we are all surviving and learning as we go, to say he is resilient is an understatement. We are so proud of our little man and what he endures everyday. We love you heaps little man. Love mummy and daddy x

I'm walking in Mackay to turn type one into type none!

I'm joining the world's largest walk for a future without type 1 diabetes (T1D) at Queens Park on Sunday 30 March 2025!

Why? To help fund life-changing research aimed at improving lives and curing T1D. 

Type 1 diabetes can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.
