Join me in the walk to cure type one diabetes!
Type 1 diabetes is not caused by a bad diet, unhealthy weight or lifestyle choices. It is a chronic, lifelong, autoimmune condition where T cells destroy pancreatic beta cells inside the pancreas (a vital organ in the human body). It can sneak up on anyone of any age at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day. Type 1 diabetics must make on average 180 more decisions a day than someone without type 1 diabetes would to remain safe, healthy and alive.
This year marks 18 years since diagnosis - 18 years since my pancreas died and inconveniently ceased insulin production, which sucks because you kinda need that to live! Long story short, for many years, diagnosis meant multiple daily finger pricks and injections, plus many sporadic hospital trips. As I’ve gotten older, injections and finger pricks have quickly turned into pumps and CGMs. So, in hopes of further progression in the development of technology and advances in research that could lead to a cure one day, I decided that this would be a good time to have some fun and raise some money towards JDRF’s type one diabetes research and participate in the JDRF walk to cure diabetes.
2 years ago, I raised almost $2,500 for JDRF, and dyed my hair blue to represent JDRF and the 130,000 Australians living with type 1 diabetes. I understand not everyone is in the position to contribute a monetary donation, but if you still want to contribute, you can do so by walking with me on Sunday the 16th of march, 2025, at Victoria Park in Herston, Brisbane, sharing the link to donate or joining my team and fundraising with me to help change the lives of Australians living with T1D. All funds raised are donated directly to JDRF. If you have any questions about diabetes or contributing to this cause, please feel free to ask me or visit the JDRF website. ?
