I'm walking for a world without type one diabetes

I'm walking in Perth to turn type one into type none!

I'm joining the world's largest walk for a future without type 1 diabetes (T1D) at Burswood Park on Sunday 9 March 2025!

Why? To help fund life-changing research aimed at improving lives and curing T1D.

Type 1 diabetes can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.

Please support my walk today.

A BIT ABOUT MY JOURNEY TO DIAGNOSIS:

I was sick for quite a few years with constant tummy/vomiting issues when I was 16yrs old - Some days I couldn't even keep food down and I would be bed ridden sucking on Hydralyte icy poles to keep my fluids up. My mum was constantly taking me to the GP saying something isn't right with her this is too constant and she can barely function properly.. The GP kept turning us away and saying there was nothing wrong.. The GP ended up calling me a hypochondriac and told me to stop coming to the practice as nothing was wrong with me. My mum pushed to get a referral to a Gastroenterologist as she knew something was not right. The wait list for the Gastro was about 6 months and by this stage I lost approximately 5 kilograms and I was drinking 600ml of water as a sip but didn't think much of it as I was always a thirsty person. We managed to get a cancellation appointment with the Gastroenterologist and he ran full bloods and examined me. We got a call that Friday night at 10pm advising that I was a Type 1 Diabetic in DKA with a blood sugar level of 58 and to head straight to the ED as he didn't know how I was still alive. I spent that Easter weekend in Swan Districts hospital learning information about diabetes and that I would have to inject myself with insulin and prick my finger for the rest of my life. I learnt blood sugar levels for a Type 1 should be between 4-8 so I have no idea how my body was still functioning at a level of 58! I'm so grateful for my body to keep pushing to stay alive and forever grateful to the Gastroenterologist who quite literally saved my life!
